    They journeyed by night, as darkness was about to raise its curtains.

    And intoxication had taken hold of him after he dozed off.

    مَتى لاحَ مِنهُ مُشرِقاً أَمطرَ الطَّرفا

    A crescent moon, with the love-stricken heart for a halo;

    Whenever he shines brightly from it, he makes the eye rain.

    A cruel one—oh, how I burn for his cool saliva!

    And darkness has imitated his quivering temple-locks.

    أُعانقُهث شوقاً فيوسِعُني رَشفا

    He guards an aged maiden of wine within the fortress of his mouth;

    I embrace him longingly, and he lavishes sipping kisses upon me.

    Oh, what a visit—the morning spread its joy

    Upon us, as though dawn had never parted from the beloved.

    أُنادي على ما فاتَني منه والهفا

    I rejoiced in longing that overtakes me, and in burning anguish;

    I cry 'Alas!' over what I have missed of him.

    I wonder who gave that slender branch wine to drink,

    So that what swayed his waist made his gaze narcissus-like?

    And who made the fresh rose grow upon his cheek,

    And increased my heart's weakness through its double bloom?

    فَنُهدي بضوءٍ من مُحيَّاهث لا يُطفا

    My bewilderment grows in the darkness of his hair's night;

    Then we are guided by a light from his face that never goes out.

    When he shone in a night of tresses and swayed,

    He showed you darkness, dawn, a branch, and a curved sand dune.

    God bless you—what a waist! Whenever I seek his affection,

    His drunken waist comes to ask him for tenderness.

    They say he is skittish and keeps his distance,

    As though they had never known the young gazelle—the fawn.

    My soul be ransom for a phantom that visited me after a slumber,

    And greeted me while the morning star was about to fade from sight.
