سهامٌ حاجباكَ لها حنايا
Your glances, which slay humankind,
Your glances that illuminate the wilds
are arrows; your brows are their bows.
Are arrows, your eyebrows give them grace

بهذا فالقُلوبُ هيَ الرَّمايا
When you string them and shoot from them,
If you prepare and shoot them away
in this way, it is hearts that are the targets.
Then hearts are the targets

You have mastered every archer with your stature's reproach,
With some charm you conquer every admirer
and that justice is injustice to the subjects.
That justice is oppression of the subjects

And you have appointed passion ruler over my heart;
And you made passion rule my heart
so may God make no one but me suffer through it.
So God did not make anyone else more miserable than me

I wish a dream-vision from you would come to me,
If an apparition of you came to me
so the afflictions I endure might be eased,
To lighten what troubles I endure

I would lay my cheeks beneath its feet
and spread cushions for it from my entrails.
And furnish it with the lining of my bowels

No, by your love, this unjust treatment
By your love! This avoidance and

This coldness is nothing but death

When you laugh, the cloud of my tears pours down;
When you smile my tears pour
for that gleam comes from the lightning of your front teeth.
That brightness is from the lightning of joy

Threaten me with anything but abandonment, for I
Threaten me with anything but separation
regard it as the gravest of all kinds of calamity.
For I see it as the worst kind of tragedies

يُقاسي الُمرَّيا حلوَ السَّجايا
May your enemy live my life and, like me,
Your enemy's life is my life, and my equal's
endure bitterness, O sweet-natured one.
Who suffers bitter hardships and sweet luxuries
