Who made dawn rise in the darkness of hair,

and who swayed like a fresh shoot of the bān tree,

and who gave the full moon well-aged ruby-red wine,

until he sank wine's stars within a moon?

Even gazelles' eyes draw no blades,

but kill lovers only with a glance.

    والحُورُ تَقتنصُ الآسادَ بالحَورِ

    And a dark-eyed one—his eyes' beauty ensnared me in his glance;

and the dark-eyed snare lions with their eyes' beauty.

It is as though his face were a full moon, and his speech

pearls; lovers are spent for him like purses of coins.

Who will bring me a full moon with a dwelling in my heart,

from which he sent a downpour of rain to my eyes?

God, what his eyes have done to me! And how often

you have intoxicated me with the potency of his cool saliva!

Is there a way for me to that supple figure? Perhaps

I may embrace a bough and pluck ripe fruit.
