May good be yours: this is the lightning of Burqat ʿĀqil.

So turn aside; perhaps you will pay the dwellings their due.

And along the paths of passion we shall sniff their dust,

And water it with a downpour of tears from our eyelids.

And ask the valley-bend's bān-tree: has it spread fragrance since they left,

On a north wind, now those gracious ways are gone?

And we lament the times that passed beneath its shade,

When we were with gazelles, like sword-blades in form.

And will al-Muḥaṣṣab's laurel return, now that

The herd has gone far from them in the late-afternoon breeze?

Their dwellings' traces have not faded from my heart,

Though they have faded at al-ʿUdhayb and Babylon.

Their traces teach me what passionate love is,

And from their spreading trees they grant me nightingales—and heartaches.

And indeed I seek healing in the fragrance of their breeze,

Through the traces of those messages it bears.

O neighbors at al-Abraqayn, in your keeping is

A heart you have struck in every vital spot.

And it will not relent in loving you, nor be hurt by

    Words of reproach—no, nor a reproacher's rebuke.
