The verses of your magic are sent down from your glances.
Your enchanting glances reveal verses
They have no abrogation, nor any alteration.
That have no equal or substitute
أنتyou النبيُّthe prophet بهاthrough them ولحظُكَand your gaze طرفُهُits glance
فيin فَترةٍlanguor مِنهُfrom it كَدَمعِيَlike my tears مُرسَلُsent forth
You are their prophet, and your eye's gaze
You are the prophet through them, and your gaze
is sent forth in its languor, like my tears.
Is their revelation, pouring like my tears
وَيظلُّand continues يَهديguides منfrom جَبينِكَyour brow صبُحُهُits dawn
وَيظَلُّand remains منfrom صُدغَيكَyour two temples لَيلٌa night أَليلُpitch-dark
And its dawn keeps guiding from your brow,
Your morning radiates guidance from your brow
and from your temples a pitch-dark night remains.
While night, so gentle, spills from your temple
إنif كنتَyou had أهديتَbestowed الرُّقادَsleep ولمand did not تَزُرvisit
بُخلاًout of stinginess فَطيفُكُthen your phantom بالزَّيارةِwith visits أَبخَلُstingier
If you have bestowed sleep but have not visited,
If you denied sleep and never visited
out of stinginess, then your phantom is even stingier with visits.
Was it from stinginess? Your apparition is less stingy
أَوor كانَwere عِطفُكُyour side مِثلَlike صُدغِكَyour temple-lock عاطِفاًyielding
ماnot مالَinclined منfrom عُجبٍconceit وَقَدُّكَand your figure أَميلُmore inclined
Or were your side as yielding as your temple-lock,
Or was your affection like your cheek, so tender
it would not sway with pride, though your figure sways still more.
It never inclined from wonder, your neck so bent
ياO قَلبُheart كَمhow many أَرسَلتَyou sent طَرفاًa glance رائِداًas a scout
حَتَّىuntil غَداbecame للبَدرِfor the full moon فيكَwithin you المنزِلُthe dwelling
O heart, how many a glance you have sent as a scout,
Oh heart! How many a scout did you dispatch
until you became the full moon's dwelling.
Until the full moon made its home in you
دَعdisregard منwhoever يَلومُكَblames you فيfor مَعاطفِcurves ذابلٍa slender one
بلrather كيفَhow يَذبُلُwithers منone who بلوَمكَthrough reproaching you يَذبُلُwithers
Ignore whoever blames you for a slender one's curves.
Let those who blame you in faded cloaks be
But how can one wither who withers through reproaching you?
Rather, how can one you blame ever fade?
فَلقَدfor indeed أجَنَّveiled الصُّدغُthe temple-lock عارضَthe cheek-down خَدِّهhis cheek
فَهُماso the two of them عَلَيهupon it مُقيَّدٌfettered ومُسلَسلُand chained
For the temple-lock has veiled the down upon his cheek;
For the cheek gathered its companion's cheek
so upon it, one is fettered and the other chained.
Both tethered and chained to it
