ياO منyou who رَأَىsaw بارِقاًa lightning flash لَمُوعاgleaming
يا من رَأَى بارِقاً لَمُوعا
باتَspent the night فُؤاديmy heart بِهِby it مَروُعَاterrified
باتَ فُؤادي بِهِ مَروُعَا
O you who saw a gleaming flash of lightning,
O you who saw a flashing lightning
My heart spent the night terrified by it.
My heart spent the night frightened by it
راحَwent on يُشِبُّkindling الغَرامَpassionate love حَتَّىuntil
راحَ يُشِبُّ الغَرامَ حَتَّى
أَنظرَI see مِنfrom مُقلَتيmy eye نَجيعاfresh blood
أَنظرَ مِن مُقلَتي نَجيعا
It went on kindling passion until
Love began to resemble
I saw fresh blood issuing from my eye.
I look from my eyelashes, a torrent
ذَكَّرَنيreminded me بالغُويرِat al-Ghuwayr عَهداًa past time
ذَكَّرَني بالغُويرِ عَهداً
أَيامَthe days كُناwe were بِهِin it جَميعاall together
أَيامَ كُنا بِهِ جَميعا
It reminded me of a time at al-Ghuwayr,
It reminded me of the past days
The days when we were all together there.
When we were all together
وَيلاهُalas! هَلwill ...? تَرجِعُreturn اللَّياليthe nights
وَيلاهُ هَل تَرجِعُ اللَّيالي
تَقضيdecree لَناfor us بالحِمَىin the protected pasture رُجوعَاa return
تَقضي لَنا بالحِمَى رُجوعَا
Alas! Will the nights return,
Woe to it, do the nights return
Granting us a return to the protected pasture?
To fulfill for us the return of passion
ياO جِيرَةَneighbors الجِزعِal-Jiz‘ (the valley bend) منwho لِصَبٍّfor a lovesick man
يا جِيرَةَ الجِزعِ من لِصَبٍّ
يُمطِرُrains مِنfrom بَعدِكُمafter you دُموعاtears
يُمطِرُ مِن بَعدِكُم دُموعا
O neighbors of al-Jiz‘, who will help a lovesick man
O neighbor of sadness from a youth
Who rains tears after your departure?
Who rains tears after you
قدindeed أَطلَقَتunleashed عَينُهُhis eye عُيوناًsprings
قد أَطلَقَت عَينُهُ عُيوناً
وَطَلَّقَتand divorced فيكُمُbecause of you الهُجوعَاsleep
وَطَلَّقَت فيكُمُ الهُجوعَا
His eye has unleashed springs,
His eyes unleashed springs
And, because of you, divorced sleep.
And set free in you the yearning
