    فهُما عَوناهُ على تلَفي

    Ask him about my longing and my infatuation;

for both are his helpers in my destruction.

Joseph-like in beauty, he stands alone,

as I stand alone in sorrow over him.

The pearls of his mouth have only

    that coral for a shell.

My fortune with him is low, yet I see

that in my love for him lies my honor.

O full moon, who with the radiance

of his face dispels the gloom of night,

by the crimson blush upon your cheek

and the slender grace of your figure,

strut with a waist no one has clasped,

    and a flank that will not bend;

and rule at will over a sufferer's heart,

bewildered by love, enamored, wasting away.

His yearning for you has embraced him

    as lām embraces alif.

Under love's law, it is never

required that the beautiful keep faith.

O my tears, if I fall silent,

then you explain love and describe it.
