    This is the dwelling—kiss the soil of its trodden places.

    You will find its earth, when kissed, to be richly fragrant musk.

    Dwellings—whenever a breath of the east wind passes through them,

    it stirs perfume and ambergris from their soil.

    The auspicious, rightward-passing herd has shunned them, though often

    I knew there a rightward-passing gazelle and a wild-ox calf.

    Stopping places there rekindle my passion—

    places I journeyed to for love, by day and by night.

    And how many a night I spent within their precincts:

    so sweet was closeness, I knew no sleep there.

    وأَهصرُ فيها الغُصنَ رَيَّانَ أَخضرا

    I would watch the full moon rise in their darkness,

    and draw toward me there the branch, lush and green;

    and pluck fresh roses while sipping saliva,

    showing red on one with green-tinged sideburns.

    And I would sip choice wine from what resembles agate,

    and kiss the radiant likeness of chrysanthemums.

    من الصَّيِّبِ الهتَّانِ مَفصَومَةَ العُرا

    May God water those dwellings with clouds

    of steadily pouring rain, their bonds broken loose;

    and may the meadow flourish through them, till you find there

    a breeze perfumed like the breath of saffron.
