O bearer of news of the generous, following
O you who convey the news of the generous ones, following
The traces of their deeds in every course they pursued,
Their tracks in all they have trodden,
إِذاَif سَأَلتَyou ask عَنِabout الدُّنياthe world وَوَاحِدِهَاand its peerless one

If you ask about the world and its peerless one,
If you are asked about the world and its one,
Then say: Damascus, and Musa al-Ashraf, the king.
Say: Damascus, and Musa the most noble king,
المُستَنيرُradiant سَناًwith brilliance والَّيلُand the night مُعتكرٌthick with darkness
والمُستَشيطُand raging سَطَاًin assault والخَيلُand the horses تَعتَرِكُclash
Radiant with light while the night is thick with darkness,
The one illuminated as the days, while the nights are dark,
And raging in assault while the horses clash.
The one pulling out his sword, while the horses clash,
مَلكٌa king تَبَرُّيَمينُthe oath proves true الُمقسِمينَthose who swear إِذاَwhen

A king—the oath of those who swear proves true when
A king whom those who swear, swear by without hesitation,
They say without doubt, 'Indeed, he is an angel.'
Saying undoubtedly: he is the king,
يُخفِيhe conceals الصنَّيعةَthe good deed لُطفاًout of delicacy وهيand it is ظاهِرةٌapparent

He conceals his good deed out of delicacy, though it is plain,
He hides benevolence out of kindness though it is apparent,
And veils his benevolence without affectation, though it lies exposed.
And veils righteousness out of pardon though it is exposed,

مَنwho قالَsaid إِنَّthat السهُّاSuha منfrom دوُنِهاbeneath them دَركُa lower rung
The qualities of his lofty virtues delight; no exaggeration is made
The attributes of his glories have flown so it is no wonder,
By one who says that Suha is a lower rung beneath them.
That one who says the meteors apart from it are but sparks,
تَوَدُّwish شُهبُthe bright stars of الدُّجَىَthe dark night حُباًout of love لأخمصِهِfor his foot's arch

The bright stars of night wish, for love of his foot's arch
The tails of the nightly darkness love to caress his feet,
And his tread, that the celestial sphere would cast them into the dust.
As if the orbit wishes to cast them in the ground as pegs,
تَناقضَتcontradict each other رَاحتاهُhis two palms فهيso it is يَومَon a day of وغَىًbattle

His two palms are at odds: on a day of battle they are
His two hands contradicted each other; one day in the havoc of war,
Untried in slaying, yet seasoned in counsel.
They are ferocious, and in views and opinions they wrestle,
قَدindeed أَسعدَhas made fortunate اللهُGod مَنwhoever أَمسَىhas come to be بِراحَتهِthrough his palm

God has indeed blessed whoever, through his palm, has come
God has granted success to whoever spends his evening
To hold fast amid calamities to the rope of God.
In events, holding onto God's rope.
