صِف لأحبابي بِنَجدٍ
ياO بُريقَlittle lightning-flash الشِّعبِof the ravine وَجديmy longing
يا بُريقَ الشِّعبِ وَجدي
Describe to my beloveds in Najd,
Convey to my loved ones in Najd
O little lightning-flash of the ravine, my longing.
O lightning flash of the highlands, my passion
واشرحِand explain الشوقَthe yearning وخبرand tell
واشرحِ الشوقَ وخبر
أنهُمthat they سؤليmy desire وقصديand my aim
أنهُم سؤلي وقصدي
Explain my yearning, and tell them
Explain the longing and inform
that they are my desire and my aim.
That they are my wish and aim
قُلsay لهمُto them ياO برقُlightning إِنِّيthat I
قُل لهمُ يا برقُ إِنِّي
هائِمٌlove-struck فيin الحُبِّlove وحديby myself
هائِمٌ في الحُبِّ وحدي
Tell them, O lightning, that I
Say to them, O lightning, I
am lost in love, alone.
Roam in love alone
قدindeed برانيhas worn me down الشوقُyearning حتىuntil
قد براني الشوقُ حتى
صرتُI have become نضواًemaciated تحتَbeneath بُردِيmy cloak
صرتُ نضواً تحتَ بُردِي
Longing has worn me down until
Yearning has weakened me until
I have become emaciated beneath my cloak.
I became limp beneath my cloak
قِفhalt بذاتِat the place of الضَّالِthe wild lote trees وهناصand [unclear]
قِف بذاتِ الضَّالِ وهناص
بينَamong باناتٍmoringa trees ورَندِand laurels
بينَ باناتٍ ورَندِ
Halt at Dhāt al-Ḍāl, and [unclear word],
Stop at the lost one's abode and wail
among moringa trees and laurels.
Among the sand dunes and meadows
وأسأَلِand ask الباناتthe moringa trees عنهُمabout them
وأسأَلِ البانات عنهُم
وابكِهِمand weep for them إنif كانit is يُجديof any use
وابكِهِم إن كان يُجدي
And ask the moringa trees about them,
Ask the sand dunes about them
and weep for them, if it will help.
And weep if it is of any use
ياO وُلاةَrulers القَلبِof the heart أَنتُمyou
يا وُلاةَ القَلبِ أَنتُم
فيin النَّوىseparation والقُربِand nearness عنديwith me
في النَّوى والقُربِ عندي
O rulers of the heart, you are
O rulers of my heart, you are
with me in separation and nearness.
In intent and kinship close to me
عَلِّلواsoothe قَلباًa heart عَليلاًailing
عَلِّلوا قَلباً عَليلاً
قانعاًcontent منكُمfrom you بوَعدِwith a promise
قانعاً منكُم بوَعدِ
Soothe an ailing heart,
Excuse a heart, sick and frail
content with a promise from you.
Content with your promise
وامنحُوهُand grant it اليومَtoday وصَلاًunion
وامنحُوهُ اليومَ وصَلاً
بعدَafter هجرانٍdesertion وَصَدand rejection
بعدَ هجرانٍ وَصَد
And grant it union today,
And grant it today a union
after desertion and rejection.
After estrangement and aloofness
عاشِقٌa lover لولاwere it not for هَواكُمlove of you
عاشِقٌ لولا هَواكُم
لَمdid not يَهِمwander love-struck يوماًever بنَجدِin Najd
لَم يَهِم يوماً بنَجدِ
I am a lover; but for my love of you,
A lover, if not for your love
I would never have wandered love-struck in Najd.
Would have never cared for Najd
