سَلامٌpeace علىupon الدَّارِthe dwelling التيthat قَدalready تَباعَدَتhas grown distant
وَدَمعيand my tears بِهاfor it طُولَthroughout الزَّمانِtime سَفُوحُever-pouring
Peace upon the dwelling that has grown distant,
Peace upon the home that has become so distant
And my tears for it pour for all time.
While my tears upon it throughout time pour down
خَلِيلَيَّmy two friends ماwhat ليwith me لاnot أَرىI see بانَmoringa trees جِلَّقٍJilliq

My two friends, why do I not see Jilliq's moringa trees
My friend, why can’t I see lightning flash
Wafting fragrance, nor al-Sham's lightning gleaming?
In Janneq nor the lights of Damascus shine
يَعِزُّis hard علَيناfor us أنthat تشِطَّshould go far بِناwith us النُّوىseparation
وليand I have عَنكُمُfrom you دُونَto the exclusion of البَرِيَّةِall creation رُوحُa spirit
It pains us that separation should carry us far away,
It saddens us that sorrows take us away
And from you alone, of all creation, comes my spirit.
While my spirit remains, beyond the wilderness
إِذاwhen نَسَمَتwafted مِنfrom جَانِبِthe direction of الرَّملِthe sands نَفحةٌa breath of wind
وَفيهاand in it عَرارٌ‘arār: fragrant yellow wildflowers لِلغُوَيرِof al-Ghuwayr وَشِيحُand wormwood
When a breeze wafted from the direction of the sands,
When a breeze blows from the side of the sand
Bearing the scent of al-Ghuwayr's ‘arār flowers and wormwood,
Bearing traces of yearning and cries of despair
وَرَاحَتand drifted رِياحُthe winds الحَزنِthe rugged uplands فيin رَونَقِthe splendor of الضُّحَىforenoon
وَهَبَّتand blew لَناtoward us دونَon this side of الصَّرائِمُthe thickets رِيحُa wind
And the upland winds drifted in the splendor of forenoon,
The winds of sadness blew in the bloom of morn
And a wind blew toward us on this side of the thickets,
And roused for us, beyond the groves, a gale
تَذَكَّرتُكُمI remembered you والدَّمعُwhile the tears يَستُرُveils مُقلَتيmy eye
وَقَلبيand my heart مَشُوقٌfilled with longing بِالبِعادِby separation جَريحُwounded
I remembered you, while tears veiled my eye,
I remembered you while tears veil my eyes
And my heart was yearning, wounded by separation.
And my heart yearns, wounded by the distance
فَقلُتُso I said وليand I had منfrom لاعجِthe searing heat of الوَجدِpassionate longing زَفرةٌa sigh
لَهاit has لَوعَةٌa burning anguish تَغدوgoes forth in the morning بهاwith it وَتَروحُand returns in the evening
So I said, with a sigh from the searing heat of longing,
I cried, oh if only the pain of love’s agony
Whose burning anguish accompanies it morning and evening:
Would come and go, moaning night and day
ألاah هَلwill يُعيدُbring back اللهُGod أَيَّامَناour days التيin which
نَعِمناwe lived in bliss بِهاin them والكاشِحونَwhile the ill-wishers نُزُوحُfar away
Ah, will God bring back our days in which
Will God return to us our days that we
We lived in bliss, while the ill-wishers were far away?
Once enjoyed, while adversity moves on?
