نَظَريmy gaze إِلَيهمtoward them والرِّكابُand the riding camels تُساقُare driven
وَجدٌpassionate longing تَنِمُّtell بِسِرِّهِof its secret الآماقُthe eye-corners
My gaze upon them, as the riding camels are driven on,
My gaze upon them as the riders are led,
Is longing whose secret the corners of the eyes betray.
Yearning secretly grows in my heart's depths.
وَتَنفُّسيand my sighing والعِيسُand the pale camels تَرفُلُstrut فيin البُرَىthe nose-rings
حادٍa chanting camel-driver علىon آثارِهاtheir tracks سَوَّاقُa driver urging onward
And my sighing, as the pale camels strut in their nose-rings,
My breath as the fawn frolics on the meadow,
Is a chanting camel-driver in their tracks, urging them on.
Pursuing her footprints a passionate hunter.
وَتَلفُّتيand my turning back نَحوَtoward الظُّعونِthe departing caravans صَبابَةًout of yearning
وَوَداعُand a farewell to حُسنِbeauty مِنهُمُamong them وَعِناقُand an embrace
And my turning toward the departing caravans in yearning,
My glance to the slender branches turns vivacious,
And a farewell to beauty among them, and an embrace.
Farewelling their beauty and embrace.
ياO جِيرَةَneighbors of العَلَمَينِal-ʿAlamayn (the two landmarks) منfrom أَرضِthe land of الحِمَىal-Ḥimā (the protected grounds)
حَيثُwhere النَّسيمُthe breeze بِنَشرِهِمwith their fragrance خَفَّاقُfluttering
O neighbors of al-ʿAlamayn in the land of al-Ḥimā,
O vicinity of the two holy precincts, from the land of sanctuary
Where the breeze flutters with their fragrance,
Where the breeze stirs with them swift and fluttering.
حَيثُwhere القُلوبُthe hearts أَسِيرَةٌcaptive وَدُموعُناand our tears
فيin إِثرِهاtheir wake أَبَداًforever لَهاfor them إِطلاقُrelease
Where hearts are captive, and our tears
Where hearts are captives and our tears
Are forever set free in their wake.
Will forever freely flow after them.
هَلwill ...? لَيلَةٌa night مِنكُمfrom you تَعودُreturn فَذِكرُهَاfor its remembrance
عِنديwith me لَهُfor it الدَّمعُthe tears الَمصونُkept guarded يُراقُare shed
Will a night with you return? For when I recall it,
Is there a night among you that will return? For its memory’s sake
The tears I kept guarded are shed.
My guarded tears flow copiously for it.
وَتَضُمُّناand gathers us بَعدَafter التَّباعُدِseparation والنَّوَىand distance
دارٌa dwelling لَهاfor it بِجَمالكِمُwith your beauty إشراقُradiance
And will we be reunited, after separation and distance,
And gathering us after the separation and distance,
In a home radiant with your beauty?
A house illuminated for it by your beauty.
حَتَّىso that أَبثَّكُمُI confide to you الغَرامَpassion وَماand what حَوَىhas contained
قَلبيmy heart وماand what صَنَعتhave done بِهِto it الأشواقُthe yearnings
So I may confide to you my passion and all that is held
Until I confessed to you my passion and what
In my heart, and what yearnings have done to it,
My heart bore and what longings crafted.
وأقولَand I say للدَّهرِto Time الُمفَرِّقِthat separates بَينَناbetween us
لَمnot يَبقَremain بَعدَafter الاجتِماعِreunion فرَاقُparting
And say to Time, which parts us:
And I say to fate that separated us,
No parting remains after reunion.
After reunion shall no parting remain.
