ياO مُعتَدِلwell-proportioned القِدّانin stature; indeed صَبريmy patience قدبانhas fled
وَالدَمعand tears لِخافيof hidden الغَرامpassion أَظهرrevealed اذبانwhen they appeared
O you of well-proportioned stature, my patience has indeed fled.
O you whose stride is balanced, my patience has run out
And tears, when they appeared, revealed hidden passion.
And my tears for my hidden love have become evident
جَددتyou renewed شُجونيmy sorrows وَقَدand you have كحلتlined with kohl جُفونيmy eyelids
بِالسَهدِwith sleeplessness فَبَينيso between me وَبَينَand between نَوميmy sleep شتانfar apart
You renewed my sorrows and lined my eyelids
You renewed my sorrows though you lined my eyes
With sleeplessness—how far apart my sleep and I are!
With wakefulness, so between me and sleep there is a great difference
فيin نَقضbreaking عُهوديmy covenants سَعيتyou strove سَعىthe striving of مجدّone diligent
مُذsince أَصبَحَbecame دَمعيmy tears عَلىover فُراقكparting from you غَدرانpools
You strove to break my covenants, striving with zeal,
In breaking my vows you strove hard
Since my tears at parting from you became pools.
Since my tears over your separation have become deceitful
بشراكglad tidings for you قَلانيhated me العذولthe reproacher فيكَbecause of you لاِنّيbecause I
ماnot مِلتI inclined وَحاشىand far be it from me أَميلto incline فيكَregarding you لِسلوانtoward forgetting
Good news for you: the reproacher hates me because of you, for I
Your remoteness told me to be patient with you though I am not inclined
Have never turned—and far be it from me to turn—to forgetting you.
And I avoid being inclined towards you out of caprice
ياO غايَةultimate goal of قَصديmy pursuit وَحقand by the honor of قَدركyour worth عنديin my eyes
ماnot حَلّdwelt بِقَلبيin my heart سِوىexcept خَيالَكَyour image اِنسانa person
O goal of my pursuit, by your worth in my eyes,
O object of my goal and your due merit to me
No one has dwelt in my heart but your image.
Nothing has befallen my heart except your image, O human
رِفقاbe gentle بِكَئيبwith a sorrowing man طَعَنتَهyou pierced him بِقَوامwith a form
قَدindeed علمlearned كُلّall الغُصونthe boughs مِنهُfrom it الميلانswaying
Be gentle with a sorrowing man you pierced with your form:
Be gentle with the sorrowful one you stabbed with your figure
All the boughs have learned from it how to sway.
All the branches have come to know his leaning
طاوَعتI yielded to دُموعيmy tears وَهُنّand they are فيكَabout you وُشاةinformers
وَاِنقَدتand I surrendered اِلىto الحُبّlove وَهوand it is أَعظَمthe greatest فَتانseducer
I yielded to my tears, though they betray my love for you,
My tears obeyed me and the slanderers in you weakened
And surrendered to love, the greatest seducer.
And I was led to love which is the greatest temptation
ياO غايَةultimate goal of سُؤليmy longing لَقدindeed رَثىfelt pity لنحوليfor my wasting away
فيin الحُبlove عَذوليmy reproacher وَالصخرand stone منيbecause of me قَدindeed لانsoftened
O goal of my longing, my wasting away has truly drawn pity
O object of my request, he who eulogized my leanness in love
From my reproacher in love; even stone has softened at my plight.
Surely lamented, and the rock itself would have softened from me
حملتyou burdened فُؤاديmy heart ماwhat لَيسَis not فيwithin طاقَتهits capacity
وَجَداlonging وَولوعاand ardent attachment عَلىin هَواكlove for you وَأَشجانand sorrows
You burdened my heart with more than it can bear:
I burdened my heart with what was beyond its capacity
Longing, ardor in loving you, and sorrows.
And intimacy and anguish for your love and passions
ياO بَدرfull moon أَماhas it not قَدalready كَفاكَsufficed you شاهِدevidence of سَقمىmy sickness
وَالمَدمَعand tears حَتّىthat قَضيتyou passed judgment فيagainst me بهجرانof abandonment
O full moon, has the evidence of my sickness not sufficed you,
O full moon, has not witnessing my sickness sufficed you
And my tears, that you should sentence me to abandonment?
And my tearful one until I spent time in estrangement
اِنّيindeed I بِكfor you صَبّpassionately enamored عَلىin الغَرامِlove صَبورsteadfast
لاmay not عاشَlive محبa lover شَكاcomplained of الغَرامَlove وَلاnor كانexist
Indeed, I am enamored of you, steadfast in love.
I am truly patient with love though it is bitter
May no lover who complains of love live—or ever exist!
No lover lived who complained of love or existed
