عَلىover فَقدthe loss of مِثلَكَone like you تَبكىweep العُيونthe eyes
وَتَجفوand shun لَذيذsweet المَنامِsleep الجُفونthe eyelids
For the loss of one like you, eyes weep.
For your loss, eyes weep
And eyelids shun sweet sleep.
And sweet sleep is denied to eyelids
يُهَوّنwould ease فَقدكyour loss عناfor us الخلىthe untroubled one
وَكَيفbut how يُهَوِّنcan he ease ماwhat لاnot يَهونbecomes easier
The untroubled one would ease your loss for us,
Your absence brings us solace
But how can he ease what cannot be eased?
How can what cannot be consoled bring solace?
لَقَدindeed خانَناhas betrayed us فيكَin your case هذاthis الزَمانage
فَلاso may not كانَexist هذاthis الزَمانage الخؤنtreacherous
Indeed, this age has betrayed us in your loss;
This age has betrayed us in you
So may this treacherous age be no more!
If not, this mournful age would not be
فَواso, alas أَسَفىmy grief كَمhow often سَهِرتyou kept vigil الدُجىnight's darkness
وَأَبرَزتand you revealed سِرّthe secret of الجَمالِbeauty المَصونguarded
Alas, my grief! How often you kept vigil through night's darkness,
Alas! How much did I stay up at night
And revealed the guarded secret of beauty,
And reveal the secret of protected beauty
وَأَوضَحتand you clarified لِلطالِبينَfor the seekers الهُدىguidance
وَلَيتُكَand would that you أَتمَمتَyou had completed ماwhat يَطلُبونthey seek
And made guidance clear to the seekers.
And clarify to seekers of guidance
And would that you had completed what they seek!
If only you had completed what they seek
رَمَتكَshot at you المَنونdeath عَلىat غُرّةan unguarded moment
فَماso not أَخطَأتُكmissed you سِهامthe arrows of المَنونdeath
Death shot at you unawares,
Death aimed its arrows at you suddenly
And death's arrows did not miss you.
But the arrows of death did not miss you
طَنناكwe thought you تُبقىyou would be spared لِنَفعfor the benefit of العِبادhumankind
فَخابَتbut failed بِمَوتِكwith your death تِلكَthose الظُنونexpectations
We thought you would be spared to benefit humankind,
We thought you would remain for the benefit of worshipers
But with your death, those expectations came to nothing.
But those hopes failed with your death
فَبِاللَهِso, for God's sake قِفpause ساعَةa moment يَشتَفىmay find relief
فُؤادa heart لِفَقدِكَat your loss فيهِwithin it شُجونsorrows
For God's sake, pause a moment, that relief may come
So, by God, pause a moment to quench
To a heart filled with sorrows at your loss.
A heart in anguish for your loss
لَقَدindeed سِرتyou set off نَحوtoward السَرىthe night journey مُسرِعاin haste
وَخَلَفتand you left behind أَهلِكَyour family لاnot يَفقَهونthey understand
Indeed, you set off swiftly on the night journey,
You went towards the Divine Presence hastily
And left your family unable to comprehend.
Leaving behind those who do not understand
وَلَيتُكَand would that you وَاِعدتهمyou had promised them عودةa return
وَهيهاتbut how far off هَيهاتhow far off ماwhat يوعَدونthey are promised
And would that you had promised them a return!
If only you had promised to return
But far, far off is what they are promised.
But alas, alas what they were promised
رُوَيدُكَtake your time لاdo not تَرتَحِلyou depart عاجِلاin haste
فَعَنكَfor, without you الاحِبَّةthe loved ones لاnot يَصبرونthey can endure
Take your time; do not depart in haste,
Slow down, do not depart hastily
For your loved ones cannot bear to be without you.
For your loved ones cannot bear it
عَلَيكَupon you منfrom اللَهGod سَحبclouds الرِضاfavor
وَرَوّىand may water ثَراكَyour grave's soil سِحابa cloud هتونpouring rain
May clouds of favor from God be upon you,
Upon you, from God, clouds of satisfaction
And may a pouring raincloud drench your grave's soil.
Which watered your tomb and brought tranquility
وَأَزكىand the purest صَلاةblessing عَلىupon الهاشِمِيّthe Hashimite
ماas long as هَبblows ريحa wind وَمالَتand sway غُصونbranches
And the purest blessing be upon the Hashimite,
And the finest prayer for the Hashemite
As long as the wind blows and branches sway.
Is what the winds blow and the branches tilt
كَذاlikewise الآلthe family وَالصَحبand the companions ماwhenever أَنشَدواthey recite
عَلىover فَقدthe loss of مِثلِكَone like you تَبكيweep العُيونthe eyes
Likewise upon his family and companions, whenever they recite:
Thus did the Family and Companions recite
For the loss of one like you, eyes weep.
For your loss, eyes weep
