Alas for a scholar who has gone and left the homes deserted!

Would that I knew: were you only lent to us?

    وَكَذا الدَهر يَسلُب الاِخيارا

    Time betrayed us in your loss, O finest scholar;

and thus does Time snatch away the virtuous.

My soul would ransom you, if one could ransom

a master who vanished into the soil and lay hidden.

I reproach Time for your loss, though Time has never ceased

being faithless to its people, ever treacherous.

I cannot fathom how Time, though it hastens

to bring serenity, brings forth distress.

We had trusted Time with you, until

Death assailed us openly, in broad daylight.

And we were beguiled into thinking he would remain awhile,

yet you were indeed a beguiling star.

O crescent we lost the moment it grew full,

and star that set the moment it glittered!

Would that I knew: was your companionship a dream,

whose rainless lightning appeared, then turned away?

You hastened to part; could you not

have tarried an hour, or a day?

You were a jurist among us, O Ibn al-Faqih,

weighty in speech, pure and chosen.

Then, when you lay dead, the people became

drunk, though they were not drunk.

I choose no life after losing you,

yet I have no power to choose.

    اِن في خبرة اللَيالي اِعتِبارا

    The nights deceived us with you for a time;

indeed, experience of the nights holds a lesson.

    كَيفَ نبدى عَلى المَنوح اِعتِذارا

    If our lament is long, there is no blame in it;

how could we apologize for mourning him?

You were among us a refuge for noble virtues; how often

did Time show you honor and glory!

    كَيف أَسرَعتَ بِالفُراقِ اِنهِيارا

    You were an impregnable fortress among mankind;

how swiftly you crumbled when you departed!

    ضِ كَذا الاِرض تَكسف الاِقمارا

    You were a full moon, and the earth hastened your eclipse;

thus does the earth eclipse moons.

Before losing you, we knew no full moon

that made earth and dust a shrine.

If I constantly renew my mourning for you with my tears,

I find no shame in that after losing you.

Whenever my heart glimpses the lightning of your essence,

the clouds of my tears pour down rain.

And whenever the chronicler calls, the reply comes to you:

You have made Paradise your home, O scholar.

Who, after you, will rise through teaching Hadith

to noble heights, in majesty and dignity?

The army of parting charged us, and never

have we found victory over parting.

    فَكان المنون تطلب ثارا

    The hands of Death struck us down at his loss;

    and Death was seeking vengeance.

Death hastened to take him, as though

he had been among us on loan from Death.

Yet after him we have found nothing

but solace in one who passed into death:

the master of the messengers, Ta-Ha, without whom

this existence would not have shone.

So, O Lord, bestow blessings and peace upon him,

whenever his renown for perfection grows.

And likewise upon his family and Companions, as long as

the camel-driver hastens toward him and journeys on.

And pardon this imam, so long as Abdullah

    lets tears and poems flow,

and likewise whenever he mourns him and composes:

Alas for a scholar who has gone and left the homes deserted!
