I would ransom with my father a gazelle who cruelly turned from me,

And obeyed my reproachers and made my enviers gloat,

And assailed me with a keen sword from his glance.

Who will grant me justice against his glance? Who will aid me?

And how often I sought help through his tenderness and charm,

And through his gentleness and his swaying figure.

And he shuns me all the more whenever I visit him

Out of love, and heeds the wrongdoer's words against me.

I will not turn—by his claim upon me—from loving him.

He is forever my desire and the utmost goal I seek.

What recourse have I? I am his slave, so I must

Accept rejection, if my benefactor approves.

But since he dealt unjustly in his judgments,

And sought my death with his languid form,

And called the weak eyelid to witness that I

Had left my ailments behind and returned to my bed,

I appointed his eyebrow judge over me, and indeed I

Am content with the judgments of that slender black slave.
