أَيُّهاO القَومpeople وَيَحكُمwoe to you قَدindeed هَدمتُمyou have demolished
أَيُّها القَوم وَيَحكُم قَد هَدمتُم
بُنيَةthe edifice اللَهِof God وَاِتهمتمand you accused عِبادِهHis servants
بُنيَة اللَهِ وَاِتهمتم عِبادِه
O people, woe to you—you have demolished
O people, woe to you! You have demolished
God’s edifice and accused His servants;

وَذَبَحتُمand you slaughtered هذاthis المُهَذَّبrefined man غَدراًtreacherously
وَذَبَحتُم هذا المُهَذَّب غَدراً
وَقَطَعتُمand you cut short بِغَلطَةthrough a blunder أَورادهhis daily devotions
وَقَطَعتُم بِغَلطَة أَوراده
you have treacherously slaughtered this refined man
And treacherously slaughtered this refined man,
and, in error, cut short his devotions.

ثُمَّthen نِحتُمyou lamented عَلَيهover him زوراfalsely وَلكِنbut
ثُمَّ نِحتُم عَلَيه زورا وَلكِن
ذاكَthat أَمرa matter قَضىdecreed الالهGod نَفادَهits completion
ذاكَ أَمر قَضى الاله نَفادَه
Then you wailed over him falsely—but
Then you falsely lamented him; yet
that was a decree God ordained to come to pass.
that was a matter whose completion God decreed.
أَيُّهاO النائِحونmourners مَهلاrestrain yourselves فَمنfor who ذاis it
أَيُّها النائِحون مَهلا فَمن ذا
نالَattained منfrom دَهرِنTime الخؤنtreacherous مُرادهhis desire
نالَ من دَهرِن الخؤن مُراده
O mourners, gently! For who is there
O mourners, restrain yourselves—for who
who has won his desire from treacherous Time?

لاdo not تَطيلواprolong عَلىover النَقيبthe naqib (chief) نَحيباwailing
لا تَطيلوا عَلى النَقيب نَحيبا
فَهوfor he بِالذَبحthrough being slaughtered نالَattained أَعلىthe highest سَعادَهbliss
فَهو بِالذَبح نالَ أَعلى سَعادَه
Do not prolong your wailing over the Naqib,

for through slaughter he attained the highest bliss.

كَمhow many a prophet نبيand a righteous man وَصالِحand a saint وَوَلِيّa prophet
كَم نبي وَصالِح وَوَلِيّ
ماتَdied قَتلاby being killed وَنالَand gained أَجراa reward لِشَهادَةfor martyrdom
ماتَ قَتلا وَنالَ أَجرا لِشَهادَة
How many a prophet, righteous man, and saint
How many a prophet, righteous man, and saint
has died slain and won the reward of martyrdom.
was slain and gained a reward for martyrdom!
هذِهthis سنةthe way الاِماجِدof the illustrious قدماfrom ancient times
هذِه سنة الاِماجِد قدما
كَحسينlike Husayn وَسعدand Sa'd بنson of عباده'Ubadah
كَحسين وَسعد بن عباده
This has ever been the way of the noble,
This has long been the way of the illustrious,
like Husayn and Sa‘d ibn ‘Ubada.
such as Husayn and Sa'd ibn 'Ubadah.
حازَgained هذاthis الشَريفnobleman لُطفاa favor مِنfrom اللGod (first part)
حازَ هذا الشَريف لُطفا مِن الل
هِGod (completion) وَساوىand equaled فيin حَوزِهاattaining it أَجدادَهhis forefathers
هِ وَساوى في حَوزِها أَجدادَه
This Sharif attained a grace from
This nobleman gained a favor from God,
God, and in its possession equaled his forefathers.
and equaled his forefathers in attaining it,
لَوfor (begins 'for abundance') فورabundance (completion) الاجورthe rewards وَالرُتبَةand the rank العلthe highest (first part)
لَو فور الاجور وَالرُتبَة العل
ياhighest (completion) وَحسنىand the finest reward منfrom ربناour Lord وَزيادَهand more
يا وَحسنى من ربنا وَزيادَه
His are abundant rewards and the rank most high,
through abundant rewards and the highest rank,
the fairest reward from our Lord—and yet more.
and the finest reward from our Lord, and more besides.
فَهنيأso, congratulations لهto him أَقامhe dwells بجناin gardens (first part)
فَهنيأ له أَقام بجنا
تgardens (completion) خلودeternity وَياand oh لَهاfor it منof سِيادَهeminence
ت خلود وَيا لَها من سِيادَه
Bliss be his! He has taken up his abode in gardens
So blessed is he! He dwells in gardens
of eternity—what glorious sovereignty!

ياخَليليO my friend لاdo not تَأَسَفَنَّgrieve (emphatic) وَاِرخand record the date
ياخَليلي لا تَأَسَفَنَّ وَاِرخ
قَدرdecreed اللَهGod قَتلهhis killing وَأَرادَهand willed it
قَدر اللَه قَتله وَأَرادَه
O my two friends, do not grieve; inscribe the date:
O my friend, do not grieve, and record the date:
“God’s decree slew him and willed it.”
God decreed his killing and willed it.
