فَوقَabove غُصنa bough منfrom قَدّكyour stature المياسgracefully swaying
God has made a full moon rise from your face,
God made a full moon rise from your face,
above the bough of your swaying form.
above the bough of your gracefully swaying form.
وَتَبدّيتand you appeared فيin مَطارِفِrobes حُسنbeauty

You appeared arrayed in mantles of beauty,
And you appeared in robes of beauty
and the eyes of those assembled stared in wonder.
that dazzled the eyes of those seated.
وَلَقَدand indeed راقَwas enchanting وَجهthe face حُسنِكَyour beauty حَتّىso much that
أَسكَرintoxicated الناظِرينَthe onlookers منfrom غَيرِother than كاسa cup
So charming indeed was your beautiful face
And indeed, your beauty’s face was so enchanting
that it intoxicated all who gazed, without a cup.
that it intoxicated onlookers without a cup.
وَنَفيتand you banished الرِقادsleep عَنfrom جِفنthe eyelid عَينيmy eye
وَتَرَكتand you left الفُؤادthe heart فيin وُسواسanxious turmoil
You banished sleep from the lid of my eye
And you banished sleep from my eyelid,
and left my heart in whispering unrest.
and left my heart in anxious turmoil.
أَيُّهاO البَدرfull moon لَوif تقاسىyou endured وَلوعىmy ardent longing
وَغَراميand my passion رحمتyou would have pity مِمّاfor what أقاسيI endure
O full moon, if you endured my ardor
O full moon, if you endured my ardent longing
and my passion, you would have mercy on me for what I suffer.
and my passion, you would pity me for what I endure.
كَمhow much مشيبgray hair بعثتهyou sent it وَسهادand sleeplessness
فتلقيتهso I received it بِعَينيwith my eye وَراسىand my head
What graying you have brought upon me—and what sleeplessness!
How much gray hair and sleeplessness you have sent,
I received them in my eye and upon my head.
so I received it with my eye and my head.
فاتِقso fear اللَهGod وَاِستَترand conceal yourself بِحجابwith a veil
اِنّindeed رُؤياكَthe sight of you فتنَةa temptation لِلنّاسto people
So fear God, and conceal yourself behind a veil:
So fear God and conceal yourself behind a veil:
the sight of you is a temptation to all people.
indeed, the sight of you is a temptation to people.
