حتامhow long ياO ساجيlanguid اللَواحِظthe glances تَهجُرyou shun
وَالىand until مَتىwhen تَجنىyou act cruelly عَلَيّagainst me وَأَصبِرand I endure
How long, O languid-eyed one, will you shun me?
How long, O you of languid glances, will you shun me?
And how long will you wrong me while I endure?
And until when will you wrong me while I endure?
وَعلامand why تَنهَرُنيyou rebuke me وَفيمand for what تَروعنيyou frighten me
ظُلماunjustly وَتَنهىand you forbid بِالجَمالِthrough beauty وَتَأمُرand you command
Why do you rebuke me, and why do you frighten me
And why do you rebuke me, and why do you frighten me
Unjustly—while with beauty you forbid and command?
Unjustly, and with your beauty forbid and command?
ياO قاتِليmy slayer بِمهندwith an Indian-steel sword منfrom لَحظِهhis glance

O my slayer, with an Indian-forged blade drawn from his glance,
O my slayer, whose glance is an Indian-steel blade,
Surely what that dusky, lance-like figure has wrought is enough for you.
What the dusky figure has done is enough for you.
كَمhow much ذاthis أَقاسىI suffer فيكَfor you وجداyearning كُلَّماwhenever

How long must I suffer passionate longing for you? Whenever
How much longing I suffer for you! Whenever
You heap on more of this cruelty, it only grows.
You increase this cruelty, my longing grows.

What recourse have I? A longing that increases, and a tear
What can I do? Longing grows, and tears
Forever flowing, and a heart that splits apart.
Flow forever, while my heart breaks apart.
وَلَقَدand indeed نظمتI strung مِنَfrom الدُموعthe tears قَلائِداnecklaces

وَفَتنتand I was bewitched فيكby you وَأَنتَand you بيof me لاnot تَشعرare aware
Indeed, I have strung necklaces out of tears,
I have indeed strung necklaces of tears,
And I have been enthralled by you, while you know nothing of me.
And been bewitched by you, while you are unaware of me.

Ask the long night about me, for it
Ask the long night about me, for it
Knows best what love has done, and can best tell.
Knows better what passion has done, and is better informed.

O you who blame me, leave me: love’s affair is not
O my reproacher, leave me, for love's course is not
In my hands, nor can I command love.
In my hands, nor do I hold sway over love.
أَتَظُنّdo you think انيthat I منfrom تباريحtorments الضَناwasting sickness
اِنجوI escape وَقَدand already لاحhas appeared العذارthe cheek-down الاِخضرgreen
Do you think that, from the torments of wasting love,
Do you think that, from the torments of wasting sickness, I
I shall escape, now that the green cheek-down has appeared?
Can escape, now that the green cheek-down has appeared?
كَيفَhow الخَلاصُescape وَليand I have فُؤادa heart كُلَّماwhenever

How can I escape, when I have a heart that, whenever
How can I escape, when I have a heart that, whenever
I show it the door to consolation, refuses it?
I show it the door to consolation, rejects it?
ياO حيرَةbewilderment المُشتاقthe yearning lover اِنif هُوَhe لَمdoes not يبحreveal

بِالحُبّof love ماتَhe dies وَانand if يبحhe reveals لاnot يعذرhe is excused
O the yearning lover’s bewilderment: if he does not confess
Oh, the bewilderment of the yearning lover! If he does not confess
His love, he dies; and if he does, he is not excused.
His love, he dies; and if he does, he is not excused.
أَبداendlessly تُحَرّكهstir him الشُجونsorrows فيشتَكيso he laments
وَيُهزهand shakes him ذكرmention الوِصالunion فَيسكرso he grows drunk
Forever his sorrows stir him, and he complains;
Sorrows stir him endlessly, so he laments;
The memory of union shakes him, and he grows drunk.
And mention of union shakes him, so he grows drunk.
ياO مُهجَتيmy heart الحراburning عَلَيهِfor him تَفتىyou perish (likely intended تفنى)

O my burning soul, break apart for him
O my burning heart, you perish for him
In passion—why should you hold back from loving him?
With longing; you have no retreat from loving him.

A glance attacks, and a gracefully swaying figure
A glance that charges, and a swaying figure
Invades—yet the enchantment of his two cheeks is greater.
That invades—yet the allure of his two cheeks is greater.
