    By your life, while I live I am indeed afraid

    Of Bishr, though I will not abandon a blood-feud.

    When my heart is loyal to the caliph,

    And the prince's face is welcoming when I come before him,

    تَخَالُ القُمَامَ تَحتَهَا حَطَباً جَزلاَ

    I humble my enemies, and my cauldrons seethe;

    You would take the refuse beneath them for thick, dry firewood.

    So if I satirize Yarbuʿ, I see no

    Superiority in their oldest elder over a youth.

    بِطَاءٌ إِلَى الدَّاعِى إِذا لَم يَكُن أكلاَ

    Their guest-bowls are small, their anuses huge;

    Slow to answer a summons unless it is to a meal.

    A petty little tribe: they cannot exact their vengeance,

    Nor ever outpace a seeker of revenge.

    They are alike, like a donkey's teeth; you see no

    Superiority in a gray-haired man among them over a youth.

    By my life, al-Farazdaq has indeed sold himself

    At a loss, and raced—neither a worthy rival nor a stallion.
