He fought until he died the noblest of deaths,
He fought until he died the noblest of deaths,
with a pure white blade, like a lightning flash, keen to sever.
With a bright, clear sword, lightning-like and keen-cutting.

And around the hill, beneath his banner, were struck down
Around the hill, beneath his banner, were felled
men noble in endeavor, sprung from noble clans.
Men noble in their deeds, from noble clans.

On the day of encounter Ibn Mikhnaf met his appointed death,
Ibn Mikhnaf met his death on the day of battle,
and every stalwart circling him turned his back.
And every feeble-minded, wavering man turned away from him.

He sent aid, yet no aid was sent him; he died girded and ready
He gave aid but was not aided, and died girded and ready
for God—he did not depart clad in a traitor's robes.
To go to God; he did not depart in a traitor's garments.
