فَقُلتُso I said تَلَقَّاكَmay He receive you الإِلَهُGod بِرَحمَةٍwith mercy
وَصَلَّىand may He bless عَلَيكَupon you اللهُGod رَبُّLord المَشَارِقِthe places of sunrise
So I said: May God receive you with mercy,
I said may God receive you with mercy
and may God, Lord of the places of sunrise, bless you.
And may Allah, Lord of the east, bless you
لَحَىmay He curse اللهُGod قَوماًa band of men عَرَّدُواthey fled عَنكَaway from you بُكرَةًat dawn
وَلَمand did not يَصبِرُواthey stand firm لِلاَّمِعَاتِagainst the flashing swords البَوَارقِthe lightning-bright ones
May God curse the men who fled from you at dawn,
May God destroy a people who deserted you at dawn
and did not stand firm against the flashing, lightning-bright swords.
And did not have patience for the shining swords
تَوَلَّواthey turned away فَأَجلَواthen they withdrew بِالضُّحَىat midmorning عَنaway from زَعِيمِنَاour leader
وَسَيِّدِنَاand our lord فِىin المَأزِقِthe narrow pass المُتَضَايِقِconstricted
They turned away, then withdrew at midmorning from our leader
They turned away and at dawn abandoned our leader
and our lord, in the constricted pass.
And master in the tightening, narrow strait
فَأَنتَso you مَتَىwhen مَاever (conditional emphasis) جِئتَنَاyou come to us فِىin بُيُوتِنَاour homes

So you, whenever you come to us in our homes,
So whenever you came to us in our homes
will hear wailing from matrons and maidens.
You heard wailing from helpers and shoulders

They lament a man of praiseworthy nature, noble,
Crying for Mahmoud, long-suffering from the tax
steadfast amid battle in moments of true trial.
Steadfast before the tumult when faced with the facts
