وَأَىَّ الدَّهرِ أَوعَدَنَا قَبيلُ
Does Rabi'ah threaten us over Iyas?
Does Rabee'ah promise us in despair,
And when has any tribe ever threatened us?
And which time has promised us, O tribe?

وَعَضَّ بِرَأسِهِ سَيفٌ ثَقيلُ
A Haruri surrounded by the clients,
A free man whom supporters surround,
And a heavy sword bit into his head.
And a heavy sword that bites his head.

And Ibrahim is a mighty lion,
And Ibraheem proud and angry,
He has a band that speaks as he speaks,
Who has a group that says as he says.

Yemeni, driving people away from him,
Yemenis who ward people off from him
And stallion-like champions strut along its flanks.
And in their sides gallop the stallions.
حَمَىprotected الضِّيفَانَthe guests إِذwhen جَالَتfled نِزَارٌNizar
حَمَى الضِّيفَانَ إِذ جَالَت نِزَارٌ

He protected the guests when Nizar fled,
They protected the two guests when the women of Nizar walked around
As ibexes fled from the cattle.
Like she-camels walk around their calves.

But for his holding back from you, you would have been
If it were not for his restraint towards you, you would have been
Like those among the peoples whom a ghoul slew.
Like the people whose tyrants are unjust.

Himyar and her father's sons would have marched by night—
Donkeys traveled, and the clan of their father,
Quda'ah—with the Euphrates as their guide.
Quda'ah, and the Euphrates is their guide.
