ولكنbut دمعtears الشوقlonging ينكىis wounded بهby it القلبُthe heart
ولكن دمع الشوق ينكى به القلبُ
I wept, and the eye’s tears bring relief to the soul.
I wept and the tears gave respite to my soul
Yet the heart is wounded by tears of longing.
But the tears of yearning torment the heart
وذكرىand my remembrance لماof what ألقاهI suffer it ليسis not بنافعيof benefit to me
وذكرى لما ألقاه ليس بنافعي

ولكنه شيء يهيج به الكرب
And my remembrance of what I suffer does me no good.
Remembering what befell me is of no use
But it is something that stirs up anguish.
Yet it stirs up sorrow

بنار مواجيد يضرمها العتب
So, were I asked, ‘Who are you?’ I would say: one tormented
If asked who I am, I say one tormented
by a fire of ardent longings, kindled by reproach.
By fires of passion ignited by reproach

ويعتبنى حتى يُقال لي الذنب
I am afflicted with one whom I cannot reproach,
I suffer from one I cannot reproach
and he reproaches me until it is said I am to blame.
Who reproaches me until I'm deemed at fault
