عَفاhas become desolate مِنof آلِthe folk of فاطِمَةَFatimah الخُبَيتُal-Khubayt
إِلىto الإِحرامِal-Ihram لَيسَthere is not بِهِنَّin them بَيتُa dwelling
Al-Khubayt lies desolate, deserted by Fatimah's folk,
as far as al-Ihram; no dwelling remains in those places.
O my two female reproachers قَولَكُماyour counsel, you two عَصَيتُI disobeyed
لِنَفسيfor myself إِنif رَشِدتُI go aright وَإِنand if غَويتُI go astray
O my two reproachers, I have disobeyed your counsel,
on my own account, whether I go aright or astray.
بَنىbuilt ليfor me عادِياAdiya حِصناًa fortress حَصيناًimpregnable
وَعَيناًand a spring كُلَّماwhenever شِئتُI wish اِستَقَيتُI draw water
Adiya built me an impregnable fortress,
and a spring from which I draw water whenever I wish:
طِمِرّاًtowering تَزلَقُslip العِقبانُthe eagles عَنهُoff it
إِذاif ماever نابَنيbefalls me ضَيمٌoppression أَبَيتُI refuse to yield
a towering stronghold from which eagles slip.
When oppression befalls me, I refuse to yield.
وَأَوصىand charged عادِياAdiya قِدماًlong ago بِأَنthat لاnot
تُهَدِّمyou tear down ياO سَمَوأَلُSamaw'al ماwhat بَنَيتُI have built
And Adiya charged me long ago: 'Do not
tear down, O Samaw'al, what I have built.'
وَبَيتٍand many a house قَدindeed بَنَيتُI have built بِغَيرِwithout طينٍclay
I have attained
And many a house I have built without clay
or timber, and much glory I have attained.
وَجَيشٍand many an army فيin دُجىthe darkness of الظَلماءِthe dark night مَجرٍvast
يَؤُمُّheading toward بِلادَthe lands of مَلكٍa king قَدindeed هَدَيتُI have guided
And many a vast army, in the depths of dark night,
bound for a king's lands, I have guided.
وَذَنبٍand many a fault قَدindeed عَفَوتُI have pardoned لِغَيرِfor one lacking باعٍreach or power (sense uncertain)
وَلاnor واعٍunderstanding وَعَنهُand him قَدindeed عَفَوتُI have pardoned
And many a fault I have forgiven one with neither power
nor understanding; I have pardoned him.
فَإِنso if أَهلِكI perish فَقَدthen indeed أَبلَيتُI have amply provided عُذراًjustification
وَقَضَّيتُand I have fulfilled اللُبانَةَthe cherished desire وَاِشتَفَيتُand I have found relief
So if I perish, I have fully acquitted myself,
fulfilled my desire, and found relief.
وَأَصرِفُand I turn aside عَنfrom قَوارِصَbarbed taunts تَجتَدينيseek a response from me
وَلَوthough if أَنّيI أَشاءُwish بِهاwith their like جَزَيتُI would requite
And I turn aside from barbed taunts seeking my reply,
though, if I wished, I would repay them in kind.
فَأَحميso I protect الجارَthe neighbor فيin الجُلّىdire calamity فَيُمسيand he becomes
عَزيزاًunassailable لاnot يُرامُassailed إِذاwhen حَمَيتُI give protection
So I shield my neighbor in dire calamity, and he becomes
unassailable, beyond attack, when I protect him.
وَفَيتُI kept faith بِأَدرُعِover the coats of mail of الكِندِيِّthe Kindite إِنّيindeed I
إِذاif ماever خانَbetrayed أَقوامٌsome people وَفَيتُI kept faith
I kept faith over the Kindite's coats of mail; indeed,
when others broke faith, I kept mine.
وَقالواand they said إِنَّهُindeed it is كَنزٌa treasure رَغيبٌprecious
فَلاso no وَاللَهِby God أَغدِرُI betray ماas long as مَشَيتُI walk
And they said, 'It is a precious treasure.'
No, by God, I will not betray so long as I walk.
وَلَولاand were it not أَنthat يُقالَit be said حَباcrawled عُنَيسٌUnays
إِلىto بَعضِsome of البُيوتِthe houses لَقَدsurely حَبَوتُI would have crawled
And were it not that people would say, 'Unays crawled
to certain houses,' I would surely have crawled.
وَقُبَّةِand many a pavilion of حاصِنٍa chaste woman أَدخَلتُI put in رَأسيmy head
وَمِعصَمَهاand her wrist المُوَشَّمَtattooed قَدindeed لَوَيتُI twisted
And into many a chaste woman's pavilion I have put my head,
and I have twisted her tattooed wrist.
وَداهِيَةٍand many a calamity يَظَلُّremain الناسُthe people مِنهاbecause of it
I have warded off
And many a calamity that keeps people
standing with wound-probes, I have warded off.
