    Be safe—may you be spared! Yet none is safe from decay.

    Men endowed with strength perished, and I too perished.

    How can there be safety, if I desire safety,

    when death pursues me and I cannot escape?

    وَيَرى فَلا يَعيا بِحَيثُ أَبيتُ

    And I rest at midday where I see fit, yet I am not hidden from it;

    and it sees, and has no trouble knowing where I spend the night.

    Dead I was created, and before that I had not been

    a thing that dies; so I died when I came to life.

    And I shall die once more thereafter, and I shall surely know—

    if it is any use—that I shall die.
