Hear now, O guest who found fault with my lords,

Hear now, listen to my reply: I am not heedless of you.

Hear now, listen to a boast that leaves the heart bewildered

And kindles a fire within the innermost ribs.

So I recount the merits of lords, with proofs:

Their All-Merciful indeed chose them as signs.

He chose them, sterile and barren for humankind,

And hence placed them at the summit of the tribes.

From fire, sacrifice, and the ordeals to which

They submitted for love of consummate glory.

So here is an intimate friend who made the people around him

Sweet herbs of gardens with withering boughs.

And here is one offered for slaughter, whom He ransomed with His ram:

He created it at once, not as the offspring of ibexes.

And here is a chosen chief, His elect there,

And He named him Israel, firstborn of the earliest ones.

And from his exalted lineage, Abu al-Fadl Joseph—

Who fed the tribes their fill of wheat from the ears.

And in Egypt his authority ranked after Pharaoh's,

Through interpreting dreams to resolve difficulties.

And after ages they forgot what had come to them

Of goodness, mighty victory, and bounties.

Are we not the sons of chastised Egypt, where

Egypt was struck for our sake with ten scourges?

Are we not the sons of the engulfing sea, in which

Pharaoh was drowned for our sake on the day of aggression?

And the Creator brought him out to the people, that he might see

His wonders together with His unceasing bounty.

And so that those entitled to it might win the spoil,

Of pure gold upon the sword-belts.

Are we not the sons of Jerusalem, for whom were raised

Clouds to shield them throughout every stage of the journey?

From the sun and rains, they were a protection,

Sheltering their gathering places from descending calamities.

Are we not the sons of quail with manna, and of what

The flint made gush for them—the sweet waters of springs?

Its springs flow according to the number of the tribes,

Sweet and limpid, its taste unchanging.

And they remained in the wilderness for a renewed lifetime,

The Most High nourishing them with the finest foods.

So not a garment of the clothing upon them wore out,

Nor did they need shoes at any stopping place.

And He sent a light like a pillar before them,

Lighting the darkness like dawn, never departing.

Are we not the sons of the sacred Mount, which

Crumbled before the Almighty on the day of earthquakes?

    فَشَرَّفَهُ الباري عَلى كُلِّ طائِلِ

    And from awe of the All-Merciful, it was leveled in submission;

So the Creator honored it above every lofty thing.

And upon it He communed with His servant and interlocutor,

So He consecrated us to the Lord on the day of mutual imprecation.

And in the last days our Messiah came,

So he bestowed on the children of the world the peace of wholeness.
