You let tears stream over both cheeks,

And melted your ribs with the heat of sighing.

And abandoned haunts in the abodes of bliss,

And grew familiar with quarters in the abodes of misery.

You passed your night in the open, watching

The rising of bright stars on the horizon.

You wore away your life, sleepless and burning,

    Sighing, suffering, and scorched.

You turned from the boon companions of your joy, forsaking

The sweetness of life, though you did not wish to bid farewell.

And took to asceticism until you became a skittish wild beast,

After having been a sociable, devoted companion.

And defied the advisers' words, though they had known

You in youth as attentive and obedient.

So why, to what end, and for how long

Have you saddened a heart now shattered because of you?

    فرنا وران فرحتُ ثمَّ صريعا

    A gazelle passed by me, casting his glances about;

He gazed and conquered; there I fell, struck down.

And I hoped to live for him and for his sake,

In him, through him, with him, that we might rejoice together.

    ناغيتُهُ فأَرى الوفاق سريعا

    I wooed him, treated him courteously, murmured to him;

I cooed to him, and he soon showed accord.

Alas for me! He showed his favor as a ruse,

Then turned away, displaying frightening coldness.

And so you see me distraught, maddened with love,

    Sighing, groaning, shattered.

In vain I call upon death, hoping that after it

Relief may come—but who can assure me that it will listen?
