Why does the full moon's face appear yellow?
Why does the full moon's face appear so pale?
My beloved said: Do you think the moon has fallen ill?
My love asked, "Can you see the moon is ill?"
قلتُI said كلاَّno ليسdoes not يشكوsuffer from علَّةًan illness
قلتُ كلاَّ ليس يشكو علَّةً
انماonly يصفرُّturns yellow منfrom طولthe length of السهَرstaying awake at night
انما يصفرُّ من طول السهَر
I said: No, it suffers from no illness.
I said, "No, it suffers no infirmity,
It only turns yellow from staying awake so long.
But yellows from staying up all night."
وكهذاand like this حالُthe state of مَنthe one whom تسألهُyou ask him
وكهذا حالُ مَن تسألهُ
مذsince رأىhe saw عينيكyour two eyes ياO أسمىmost exalted of البشَرhumankind
مذ رأى عينيك يا أسمى البشَر
And such is the state of the one you ask,
And so is the state of one you ask,
since he saw your eyes, O most exalted of humankind.
Since your eyes he saw, O noblest of men.
