إذfor أنتyou أشفقmore compassionate منthan أمٍّa mother علىtoward ولدِa child
To your protection I fled today, O my support,
To you I sought refuge today, O my support
For you are more compassionate than a mother toward her child.
Since you are more compassionate than a mother to her child
أنتَyou الجوادُthe generous one بلاwithout مَنٍّreminders of favors bestowed ولاand without سأمٍweariness
تعطيyou give النضارَgold عطاءَas the giving الناسpeople للجددِof small coins
You are generous, without vaunting favors or growing weary;
You are the generous one without hesitation or boredom
You give gold as other people give small change.
You give vitality like people give to newcomers
أنتyou السحابthe cloud الذيwhich فاضتoverflowed مناهلهُits water sources
حتىuntil ارتوىdrank his fill كلُّevery صادٍthirsty person ذائبmelting الكبدِthe liver
You are the cloud whose fountains have overflowed,
You are the cloud whose springs have overflowed
Till every thirsty soul, his liver melting, drank his fill.
Until every melting liver is satiated

So pity a youth whom Time's fang has bitten, with no
So have mercy on a youth bitten by the fangs of time without
Fault save being gifted with melodious speech.
Fault other than being one of chirping eloquence
يهوىhe loves العلومَthe sciences وحبُّand love of الفضلvirtue شيمتهُhis nature
وينظمand composes الشِعرَpoetry نَظمَas the stringing السُحبclouds للبرَدِof hailstones
He loves the sciences, and love of virtue is his nature,
He loves knowledge and virtue is his trait
And strings poetry as clouds string hailstones.
And composes poetry like clouds compose hail
جُوزيhe was repaid علىfor نفعهِhis beneficence ضرًّاwith harm يلازمهُthat clings to him
كأنماas though الدهرTime مطبوعٌinnately disposed علىtoward الحسدِenvy
He was repaid for his good deeds with harm that clings to him,
Destiny consistently harms him
As though Time were by nature inclined to envy.
As if it is imprinted with envy
اليكَto you ارفعI raise سؤليmy plea فارعنيso lend me سمَعَاan ear
ياO منyou who غداhave become بعدafter باريthe Maker of الكونthe universe معتمديmy support
To you I raise my plea; so lend me an ear,
To you I raise my question so answer me
O you who, after the Maker of the universe, have become my support.
O you who became the one relied upon after the Creator
وعدَّتنيyou promised me وكرامand the noble among الناسpeople انwhen وعدواthey promise
وفواthey keep their word وحاشاكand far be it from you انthat تُلغىyou be excluded منfrom العددِthe number
You promised me—and noble people, when they promise,
You promised and noblemen, if they promise
Keep their word; far be it from you to be excluded from their number.
Fulfill while it is beneath you to exclude me from the count
