لمسرَّتيfor my delight بالنومwith sleep جفنَthe eyelid زمانيof my time
The beloved grew tender at an hour that had electrified
With a tender moment my lover revived me
To my delight, the eyelid of my time with sleep.
After the long slumber of my eyelids
وأباحنيand granted me وجداًout of passion وَجُوداًand out of generosity قُبلَةًa kiss
أنستmade forget جَنانيmy heart كمhow often عصاresisted وجفانيand shunned me
And granted me, out of passion and generosity, a kiss
With his kiss of passion he granted me leave
That made my heart forget how often he had resisted and shunned me.
To forget my garden after the years it deprived me
فجنيتُso I plucked منfrom خدَّيهِhis two cheeks ورداًroses فانبرىthen sprang forth

So I plucked roses from his cheeks; then forth sprang
From his cheeks I plucked roses that then sprang up
A glance that feathered its arrows and shot me.
In a fateful glance that showered and pierced me
فشكوتُso I complained ماwhat يجنيdoes wrong عليَّagainst me لفاتِنيto my charmer
فاجابنيthen he answered me اللهGod يجزيrequites الجانيthe wrongdoer
So I complained to my charmer of the harm done to me.
I complained of my tormentor’s cruelty to me
Then he answered me: “God requites the wrongdoer.”
God answered "May He repay the wrongdoer"

قولاًin word وفعلاًand in deed فيin الهوىlove أرضانيhe pleased me
I did not know which of us he meant; but
I know not which of us in this love intended
In word and deed, he simply pleased me in love.
By word and deed to ravish and entrance me
