برضاهُat his will اوor برضىat the will of المحبّthe lover فلمتُهُso I reproached him
The beloved claimed that love departs or comes
The lover claimed that love comes and goes
At his will or the lover’s will, so I reproached him.
By his acceptance or by the acceptance of the beloved, so I asked him
وسألتُهُand I asked him أفبالرضىthen, was it by choice? احببتنيyou loved me
امor أنتَyou خالٍfree of love لمnot تذقtaste ماwhat ذقتُهُI tasted it
And I asked him, “Did you love me, then, by choice,
Did you love me by acceptance
Or are you free of love, not having tasted what I have tasted?”
Or are you empty, untouched by what I have touched?
فرمىthen cast الحياءَbashfulness بجنَّتَيupon the two gardens of وجناتهِhis cheeks
ناراًa fire واطرقَand he bowed his head واجماًsilent and downcast فلثمتهُso I kissed him
Then bashfulness cast upon the twin gardens of his cheeks
So he cast modesty over his two gardens and groves
A fire; he bowed his head, silent and downcast, so I kissed him.
With fire, bowed his head, and kissed me

And the silent language of his eyes went on saying—
Then left, his face saying
Those wide eyes, since whose gaze I have worshipped him:
Those tender young girls I've worshipped since I was a lad

“This art comes from you; through you it shone, and indeed I
This art from you, through you, gained light
Was taught it from your book in youth.
And I was perhaps taught it in your book when young
أَتشكُّdo you doubt? بعدئذٍafter that وأنتwhile you are معلّميmy teacher
انيthat I بَرَعتُexcelled بهِin it وقدand indeed اتقنتُهُI mastered it
Do you doubt after that, when you are my teacher,
Will you doubt, when you're my teacher
That I have excelled in it and have mastered it?”
That I have mastered it, that I have perfected it?
