ياO لواحيreproachers وياand O عواذلfault-finders كفُّواdesist
يا لواحي ويا عواذل كفُّوا
ضاقhas dwindled ذَرعيmy endurance ماليI have no لديكُمwith you ذنبُfault
ضاق ذَرعي مالي لديكُم ذنبُ
O reproachers and O fault-finders, desist!
O my companions and friends, stop your ways
My endurance is exhausted; I have done you no wrong.
I've had enough, what wrong have I done?
قدindeed كفاكمenough for you تروّعُونَyou terrify حبيبيmy beloved
قد كفاكم تروّعُونَ حبيبي
أفصخراًis it, then, a rock تحوونyou harbor أمor هوَit قلبُa heart
أفصخراً تحوون أم هوَ قلبُ
Enough—you are terrifying my beloved!
Enough frightening my beloved,
Is it a rock, then, that you harbor, or is it a heart?
Is he to you a rock or a heart?
أيّwhat ضرٍّharm تقابلونyou requite عليهِfor it
أيّ ضرٍّ تقابلون عليهِ
مدنفاًa languishing man مضَّهُtormented him ولوعٌpassion وكربُand anguish
مدنفاً مضَّهُ ولوعٌ وكربُ
For what harm do you punish
What harm has he brought you
a languishing man whom passion and anguish have tormented?
That you attack in rage, pain and sorrow?
غيرother than صنعdoing الجميلِgood لمdid not يأتِperform يوماًever
غير صنع الجميلِ لم يأتِ يوماً
فاتركواso forsake الشرَّevil يجزِكمwill reward you عنهُfor it ربُّthe Lord
فاتركوا الشرَّ يجزِكم عنهُ ربُّ
He has never once done anything but good.
Nothing good ever came of evil acts
So forsake evil; the Lord will reward you for it.
Leave wrongdoing, and the Lord will suffice.
لمdid not اجدI find بينكمamong you رحيماًmerciful كريماًgenerous
لم اجد بينكم رحيماً كريماً
ليسthere is no فيكمamong you ياO ظالمينwrongdoers محبُّlover
ليس فيكم يا ظالمين محبُّ
I have found no one merciful and generous among you.
I've found no merciful or generous one among you
There is no lover among you, O wrongdoers.
None of you oppressors show love.
لوif هويتُمyou loved لماwould not have انقلبتُمyou turned عليناagainst us
لو هويتُم لما انقلبتُم علينا
كالافاعيlike vipers تفحُّthey hiss حيثwherever تدبُّthey creep
كالافاعي تفحُّ حيث تدبُّ
Had you loved, you would not have turned against us
Had you any passion you'd not turn against us
like vipers hissing wherever they creep.
Like snakes that creep wherever they desire.
بلrather غدوتمyou became مثلlike الملائكِthe angels خُلقاًin character
بل غدوتم مثل الملائكِ خُلقاً
كلُّevery فعلٍdeed منكمfrom you شهيٌّdelightful وعَذبٌand sweet
كلُّ فعلٍ منكم شهيٌّ وعَذبٌ
Rather, you would have become like angels in character;
Nay, you've become angels in manner
every deed of yours would be delightful and sweet.
All your acts are delightful and sweet.
ياO الهيmy God كنbe ليfor me عليهمagainst them مُعيناًa helper
يا الهي كن لي عليهم مُعيناً
قلَّhas waned صبريmy patience واشتدَّand has intensified ياO ربِّmy Lord خطبordeal
قلَّ صبري واشتدَّ يا ربِّ خطب
O my God, be my helper against them.
My God, be my helper against them
My patience has waned, and the ordeal has worsened, O my Lord.
My patience is little, O Lord, help me!
