I saw soldiers driving

I saw a group marching towards prison

a group toward the prisons.

So I asked them, what wrongs have you done?

فسألتهم ماذا جنوا

فسألتهم ماذا جنوا

قالوا لصوصٌ يسرقون

قالوا لصوصٌ يسرقون

So I asked them what crimes they had committed.

They said, we are thieves who steal

They said: "They are thieves who steal.

They stole the coins of a beautiful Gazelle, captivating eyes

سلبوا دراهمَ غادةٍ

سلبوا دراهمَ غادةٍ

حسناءَ ساحرة العيون

حسناءَ ساحرة العيون

They stole dirhams from a maiden,

So I replied, as long as this charming Gazelle, guarded purity

beautiful, with bewitching eyes."

Has stolen my soul and feelings

فاجبتُ مادام الفتا

فاجبتُ مادام الفتا

ة مليكة الحسن المصون

ة مليكة الحسن المصون

So I replied: "Since the maiden,

Even sleep from my eyelids

queen of inviolate beauty,

You thieves hold onto money but leave behind a stolen soul

سلبت نُهاي ومهجتي

سلبت نُهاي ومهجتي

حتى الرقاد من الجفون

حتى الرقاد من الجفون

has stolen my reason and my heart,

They were puzzled and whispered in secret

even sleep from my eyelids,

And their leader cried out

ألصوص مالٍ تمسكو

ألصوص مالٍ تمسكو

ن ولصَّ روحٍ تتركون

ن ولصَّ روحٍ تتركون

do you seize thieves of money

Enough! Are you all mad?

yet let a soul-thief go?"

Who is this ignorant one who believes

فتحيروا وتشاوروا

فتحيروا وتشاوروا

سرَّا وهم يتهامسون

سرَّا وهم يتهامسون

So they grew bewildered and conferred

Angels can be imprisoned?

in secret, as they whispered to one another.

واذا زعيمهمُ يصيح

واذا زعيمهمُ يصيح

كفى أأنتمُ في جنون

كفى أأنتمُ في جنون

And behold, their leader cried:

"Enough! Are you mad?

مَن ذا الذي جهلاً يرى

مَن ذا الذي جهلاً يرى

ان الملائكَ يُحبسون

ان الملائكَ يُحبسون

Who is it that, in ignorance, thinks

that angels are imprisoned?"
