لي فاتنٌ طلب المزيدَ من الهوى
جهلاًin ignorance بماof what القاهُI endure it فاستعفيتهُso I asked him to excuse me
جهلاً بما القاهُ فاستعفيتهُ
I have a captivating beloved who asked for more love,
I have a beloved who sought more love from me
Unaware of what I endure; so I asked him to excuse me.
Ignorant of what I had already given him
فاطالso he prolonged فيin عتبيrebuking me الملامَthe reproach توهُّماًsupposing
فاطال في عتبي الملامَ توهُّماً
انيthat I بخلتُI held back زهادةًout of indifference فعذرتُهُso I excused him
اني بخلتُ زهادةً فعذرتُهُ
So he went on reproaching me, imagining
So he blamed me at length imagining
That I held back out of indifference; so I excused him.
That I was miserly, so I excused him
لمdid not يعلَمنknow انthat الغرامَpassionate love بأسرهِin its entirety
لم يعلَمن ان الغرامَ بأسرهِ
عنديwithin me ولوand if بيديwithin my power لزيادةfor an increase زدتهُI would give him more
عندي ولو بيدي لزيادة زدتهُ
He did not know that love in its entirety
He did not know that all of love
Is within me; and if I could give him more, I would.
Was mine, and if it were in my hand I would have given him more
