فلقَّبوهُso they dubbed him عقيبَafter الفَتحthe conquest بالغازيas the Conqueror
A king of beauty—his glances invaded my liver;
so after the conquest they dubbed him “the Conqueror.”
سأَلتُهُI asked him بعدafter هذاthis النَصرِvictory مَرحَمَةًmercy
فجادَso he gave generously وَعداًa promise ولكنbut دونwithout إنجازِfulfillment
After this victory, I asked him for mercy;
he freely gave a promise, but did not fulfill it.
ذكَّرتُهُI reminded him بلسانin the language of الشِعرpoetry مُختَصراًbriefly
فلمbut he did not يُبَالِcare بإِبداعيfor my artistry وإيجازيand my brevity
I reminded him briefly in the language of poetry,
but he cared nothing for my artistry or brevity.
أَلغَزتُI spoke in riddles بالامرabout the matter لكنbut صغتُهُI fashioned it غَزلاas love poetry
فَرَاقَهُطيبُso the sweetness delighted him اغزاليmy love poetry بألغازيthrough my riddles
I spoke of the matter in riddles, but cast it as love verse;
so the sweetness of my love poetry, expressed through my riddles, delighted him.

And I attained what I sought, proud as Dhu Yazan,
or like Shapur ascending the throne of Ahwaz.
