and eloquent one who has crowned the age

with the wisdom and praise he has composed.

You give those of understanding a light

that has begun to guide whoever stumbles through the darkness.

You bestow nobility on people of distinction,

    and majesty, honor, and splendor.

Your judgment, whenever darkness closes in,

holds lightning that makes things clear.

    أنت اصبحت تحسن الافتاءَ

    So bring me today the best ruling on love;

you have become skilled at giving rulings.

to call our fair one 'the fair one'?

Or is it misleading to describe fair maidens

by the beauty they have donned as a robe?

No, by my life! Such descriptions hold no deceit

that would turn a maiden's chastity to dust.

to her is reckoned a fool.

deaf to the words, 'You are all one could wish for'?

Indeed, a maiden, while still a child, receives

praise for her beauty every day.

Do you think her—though she has refused to adorn herself

because she has no need of jewels—blind?

Does the mirror not show her at every moment

a full moon of her own radiance, pouring forth light?
