Our meeting became possible after hardship.

So I said, as my beloved beamed and offered greetings:

Is it the gleam of lightning that flashed, laughing, on the horizon,

Lighting all creation—or has my beloved smiled?

And the hand of longing pressed my breast to his,

And love said, “Melt in bliss, you two, and rejoice.”

The embrace draws our two hearts close for solace,

While chastity holds our two bodies apart, asserting its rule.

And when, in rapture, we melted skin and bone,

We became a single angel whose cradle is the sky.

And two figures vanished from sight, who had so often

Been made to weep tears of blood by the hand of reproachers.

Such is the fate of one who faithfully keeps the pledge:

He beholds Paradise; the betrayers, Hell.

So if you wish to part us by guile, you have only to mount

The wing of space, and use the earth as a ladder.
