I journeyed when my beloved set out as an emigrant,
On seas whose waves were made of my tears,

Aboard a ship whose reins were guided by steam,
But it was sighs from the furnace of my ribs.

They unfurled its sail though the wind had grown still,
So it sailed on my breaths and the breeze of my pleading.
لمdid not يأخذtake الربّانُthe captain اجرةَa fare حملهِcarrying him
أوَand (interrogative) لمnot يكنwas فيin ناظريَّmy two eyes ومسمعيand my hearing
The captain took no fare for carrying him;
And was he not within my eyes and my hearing?
ولطالماand how often سالتُI asked بينamong الرَكبِthe travelers عنabout
قلبيmy heart ولمand did not افطنrealize بانthat قلبيmy heart معيwith me
And how often, among the travelers, I asked about
My heart, not realizing that my heart was with me.
