يا مطرباً قد أثار الوجدَ في كبدي
لماwhen تحدَّثspoke عنof إحسانهِhis excellence العودُthe oud
لما تحدَّث عن إحسانهِ العودُ
O singer who has stirred rapture in my liver,
O singer who has stirred passion in my heart
when the oud spoke of his excellence.
When the lute spoke of his kindness
إذاwhen شدوتَyou sing بأشياخٍto old men ذويpossessing هَرَمٍadvanced age
إذا شدوتَ بأشياخٍ ذوي هَرَمٍ
نادىcalled out الشبابُyouth لقدindeed عاودتكمI have returned to you all عودواreturn!
نادى الشبابُ لقد عاودتكم عودوا
When you sing to elders of advanced age,
If you sing of elders full of wisdom
Youth calls out: “I have indeed returned to you—return!”
The youth called out, "You have returned to us, return!"
دعاكcalled you اهلكyour family ابراهيمIbrahim ماnot كذبواthey lied
دعاك اهلك ابراهيم ما كذبوا
وانand though تجلىshone forth بهذاin this الشَدوsinging داءُودDawud
وان تجلى بهذا الشَدو داءُود
Your family called you Ibrahim; they did not lie,
Your family called you Ibrahim, they did not lie
even though Dawud shone forth in this singing.
And David's affliction was revealed in this singing
