فهم يسمُّونهُ داءَ المحبينا
Ask those filled with longing what separation has done to them;
Ask those struck by love's pangs what separation did to them
For they call it the lovers' disease.
They call it lovers' mortal malady

فعاضهم عنهُ زقُّوماًَ وغسلينا
How often they hoped for a draught of sweet water in their union,
How they yearned for sweet communion's draught
Yet it gave them zaqqum and ghislin in its stead.
Only for it to turn to bitter aloe and colocynth

صاروا هشيماً وقد كانوا رياحينا
They treated it with patience that did no good; thus
They tried to heal it with patience to no avail
They became dry stalks, though once they had been fragrant herbs.
And so they crumbled, who once were fragrant as the zephyr

قالت معي كلُّ أهل العشق آمينا
When I asked for death to overtake it swiftly,
When I prayed for death to hasten to him
All lovers said 'Amen' with me.
All fellow lovers echoed my "Amen"
