فالماء يجري وحق الحب من حجر
If this heart of yours is hewn from stone,
If your heart is made of stone
yet water flows from stone—I swear by love.
Then water flows and love flows from stone

Or if it is of metal, passion, O my hope,
Or if it's made of metal then my hope, o beloved
is fire—and can metal withstand the sparks?
Is fire, and what metal can withstand sparks?

So O Rabab, the one I'm infatuated with
has left nothing of my heart's blood and spared nothing,
Nothing remains in my guts, nothing is left

Have mercy on me, feel pity until you are generous
grant me your favor; be gentle with a youth now in peril:
Be gentle with a lad who's in danger

The gray doves lamented him in their spreading trees before dawn,
The leaves mourned for him at night
when they saw his tears like dew in the predawn hour.
When they saw his tears like the early dawn dew

طي الغرام فيقضي العمر بالسهر
He keeps vigil through the nights, a dead man now being revived
He brings the nights back to life, gone to spread it
by passion's enfolding, and so spends his life in sleeplessness.
The passion of love keeps him up all night

He melted from anguish, healed from friendship, spent from sorrow
until he became a specter in the ugliest of forms.
Until he became a ghost in the ugliest form

I wished, by God, that I had never been human,
By God I wish I wasn't human
for the horror of what has befallen me, O fairest of humankind.
From the horror I went through, O best of creation

And often it seemed to me that death, for one
And I imagined that death is for he
who has become like me, is a gift of victory and triumph.
Who became like me, desiring triumph and success

Separation from her tents dressed me

And the care of passion and warfare dressed me
in a crown of gray hair, not of gleaming gold.
With a crown of gray hair, not fresh basil

I didn't imagine the garden of cheeks in my mind
without my heart finding itself in Saqar.
Except my heart becomes hellfire

So the heart is scorched, the eyelids drowned

The eyes sleepless, the soul constrained

My patience is lost, my sanity gone, she's my skin
my waiting grew unbearable, my strength failed, my life ran out.
My glory is gone, my effort is done, my life is over

Two things—one of them must come, and swiftly:
Two things bring no solace
either death or the fulfillment of desire.
Either death or attaining the beloved's affection
