Revelation descended from the heights of heaven.

O my people, help me against a group of women!

Some now know the unseen by nature,

Then others receive revelation in secret.

Here now in Damascus is a full-hipped woman,

Who claims clairvoyance when bent on estrangement.

You show her loyalty in good faith,

And she, through revelation, sees you as a hypocrite.

You reveal the truth to her out of love,

And she, by conjecture, pelts you with vile charges.

You show her humble submission out of tenderness,

And she towers above you with arrogance.

And before, how often she had shown an excess

Of passion, burning longing, and warm attention.

Back then, ardent love had a secret,

In it lay the meaning of happiness and enrichment.

Oh, my despair after my long forbearance!

Oh, my misery after so much toil!

I set out seeking her joy and contentment,

And she seeks to cloud the cup of my serenity.

She claims love, then pelts my heart

Every day with a thousand and one afflictions.

Every day I see her, I am never free

Of talk in which she deepens my dismay.

Once I was a merry companion of delight,

Then this love afflicted me with melancholy.

She laid the grounds for my overwhelming infatuation,

With care, with practiced skill, with cunning.

Then she turned away, after that, befriending

One bereft of kindness, reason, and intelligence.

Such is the lot of one who sincerely loves a close friend

Who does not know the meaning of love and loyalty.

O friend whom my great anger delights,

If only you were among my enemies today!

This unjust blame of yours came from boredom,

Not revelation; so lengthen the cords of separation.

You did not trust me despite my immense love—why?

Because you are by nature opposed to faithfulness.

You have not grown used to affection from the noble,

Rather, you have grown used to the company of the base.

Live happily with the one you love, and leave me

In my seclusion, to lament my affliction to my Lord.

I once hoped for faithfulness from you,

My expectations were dashed, and my hope in you was lost.

To me, by God, you are nothing but detestable,

You hide hatred beneath the garment of hypocrisy.

You do not know what virtue is, what nobility is, or what justice is,

By my Lord—nor even the rules of brotherhood [uncertain reading].

How often I try to cure, and how often I humor, traits

That have gone bad in you; distance is the best cure.
