مُقبلاً الاَّ توارى واستتر
Never once has the full moon seen my beloved
My beloved never saw the full moon appear
approaching without withdrawing and hiding.
Without it hiding, veiling its luminosity.

He is ashamed whenever he sees him unveiling
It is too shy should he see it exposed,
a radiant, ever-brighter, dazzling face.
Unveiling its glowing, blooming, tender charm.

شأنَ من يحيى لليالي بالسَهر
And like me, he is pale, visibly wasting,
And it is like me, pallid, lovesick,
like one who lives his nights in wakefulness.
As is the way for one who lives for nights awake.

يرقبُ النجم سهاداً للسحَر
For both of us are lovers who lament coldness,
So we are both lovers complaining of estrangement,
watching the stars, sleepless until the predawn hour.
Who gaze at the stars as pillows for daybreak,

His longing grows with the earth's beauty,
With the beauty of the earth his passion grows,
yet she grants him not even part of his desire.
Yet she cannot give him even a fragment.

For ages he has sought union with her,
He has longed for ages to meet with her,
while in love she allows only gazing.
But she refuses in love anything but to glance.

Indeed, Plato has inspired in her
For Plato inspired in her
a doctrine he established among humankind:
A doctrine he instituted among mankind:

Love is merely separation and connection,
That love is only union and separation,
for complaint or reproach and evening talk.
Not for plaints or rebukes or vigils.

A doctrine not so bad, for hearts
for hearts of lifeless matter, like stone,
Of stone, like rocks,

not for one like me, among those who feel,
Not for the likes of me, endowed with finer senses,
in whose entrails longing strikes sparks.
Whose deepest feelings kindle sparks.

While love shows him paradise,

Patience exhausted, he wakes in hell.

How many, how many a martyr to love before me
How many, how many before me, martyred in passion,
was a living presence, then became a trace through abandonment!
Whose eyes by estrangement turned to traces.

Death hastens toward him, approaching,
Death hastened to them, approaching,
and if it delays, he kills himself in despair.
Or if too slow, by despair they perished.

So if you are not granted your wishes, O heart,
So if you are not granted what you wish, oh heart,
leave it—but is there any escape from love?
Leave it, but is there any escape from love?

Love is simply involuntary; so whoever
Love is compulsory, so do not blame
blames is a fool; the wise make allowances.
A madman, and let one of reason apologize.
