    Choose among friends each son of a freeborn woman

    Whose mettle in calamity gladdens you.

    And when you choose a companion, choose a freeborn man, for

    It is his companions who bring a young man honor or disgrace.

    A dear, faithful friend who keeps faith in your absence,

    And whose greeting is cheerful and kind.

    Discerning when you consult him on any difficult matter,

    Cultivated, whose very existence vexes the envious.

    And a man will never come to ruin unless he undertakes

    A deed his sincere advisers have not approved.

    فَيهنيكَ مِنهُ وده وَوَفاؤُه

    Hold fast to such a man if you win his affection;

    Then his affection and loyalty will bring you joy.

    وَلا خَير في وَجه اِذا قَل ماؤُه

    When the face's luster fades, its modesty fades;

    And there is no good in a face whose luster fades.

    If a man has no friend who stays true

    In whatever state he may be, his hope is dashed.

    Your modesty—guard it well, for

    It is a noble man's modesty that reveals his worth.

    وَيَستُرُه عَنهُم جَميعاً سَخاؤُه

    And a man's stinginess exposes his faults to others;

    While his generosity conceals them from everyone.

    Wrap yourself in the robes of generosity, for I

    See generosity as a cloak for every fault.
