تَوَدُّyou love عَدويmy enemy ثُمَّthen تَزعُمyou claim أَنَّنيthat I
صَديقُكَyour friend لَيسَis not النوكfoolishness مِنكَfrom you بِعازِبfar removed
You love my enemy, then claim that I
am your friend; foolishness is not far from you.
بَلَوتكI tested you فيin أَشياءَthings مِنهاamong them منحتَنيyou granted me
أَمانيhopes مجاجspittle وَفيكَand within you مَخالِبclaws
I have tested you in several things: among them, you granted me
hopes—mere spittle—while you have claws.
وَلَيسَand is not أَخيmy brother منone who ودنيloves me رَأىin the sight of عَينَهُhis eye
وَلكِنbut أَخيmy brother منone who وَدَّنيloves me فيin المَغايِبِabsences
My brother is not one who loves me only within his sight,
but my brother is one who loves me in my absence,
وَمنand from مالِهِhis wealth ماليmy wealth اِذاwhen كنتI am معدماًpenniless
وَماليand my wealth لَهُis his إِنif عَضbites دَهرTime بِغاربat the withers
and from whose wealth comes mine when I am penniless,
and my wealth is his if Time bites at his withers.
فَماso not أَنتَyou إِلّاexcept كَيفَhow اِنتَyou وَمَرحَباand welcome
وَبِالبيضِand with silver coins رواغevasive كَروغlike the dodging of الثَعالبfoxes
So you are nothing but “How are you?” and “Welcome!”—
and with silver coins, you dodge as foxes dodge.
