I found comfort in my solitude and kept to my home.

So honor [grew] for me, and joy increased.

And time [taught me a lesson]—would that I

Had withdrawn, neither receiving nor paying visits.

And I am not one to say, as long as I live:

Has the army marched, or has the emir encamped?

And whoever is ignorant of the men of the age,

I, for my part, know them and am well acquainted with them.

They seem, when I think of them, to be

    Wolves, or dogs, or donkeys.
