إِلىto اللَهِGod اِشكوI complain إِنَّهُindeed He مَوضعthe place for الشَكوىcomplaint
وَفيand in يَدِهِHis hand كَشفremoval of المَضرةharm وَالبَلوىand affliction
To God I make my complaint, for He is the refuge of every complaint;
To God I complain, for He is the refuge for complaint;
in His hand lies deliverance from harm and affliction.
and in His hand lies the removal of harm and affliction.
خَرَجناwe have left منfrom الدُنياthe world وَنَحنُwhile we مِنamong اِهلِهاits people
فَلَسناso we are not مِنamong الاِحياءِthe living فيهاin it وَلاnor المَوتىthe dead
We have departed from the world while still among its people,
We have left the world, though we are still among its people;
so we are neither among its living nor its dead.
we are neither among its living nor its dead.
اِذاwhen دَخَلenters السجانُthe jailer يَوماًone day لِحاجَةfor an errand
عَجبناwe marvel وَقُلناand we say جاءَhas come هذاthis man منfrom الدُنياthe world
Whenever the jailer enters one day on some errand,
When the jailer enters one day on an errand,
we marvel and say, “This man has come from the world.”
we marvel and say, “This man has come from the world!”
وَنَفرحand we rejoice بِالرُؤياin dreams فَجلso most of حَديثُناour conversation
اِذاwhen نَحنُwe اِصبَحناwe reach morning الحَديثtalk عَنabout الرُؤياdreams
We delight in dreams, for most of our conversation—
We rejoice in dreams, and most of our conversation
when morning finds us—is talk about dreams.
when morning comes is talk of dreams.
فَإِنso if حَسَنتit is good لَمnot تَأَتِcome to pass عَجلin haste وَأَبطَأَتand it is delayed
وَإِنand if قَبَحتَit is bad لَمnot تَحتَبِسbe held back وَأَتَتand it comes عَجلىin haste
If a dream is fair, it is slow to come and long delayed;
If a dream is good, it is not quickly fulfilled, but is delayed;
but if it is foul, it does not tarry and comes in haste.
and if it is bad, it is not held back, but comes in haste.
طَوىhas concealed دونَناfrom us الأَخبارُthe news سِجنa prison مُمنَعstrongly defended
لَهُit has حارِسa guard تَهداrest العُيونُthe eyes لاnot يَهداhe rests
A forbidding prison has folded the news away from us;
A fortified prison has shut the news away from us;
it has a guard: eyes may rest, but he never rests.
it has a guard: eyes rest, but he does not rest.
قَبرُناwe have been entombed وَلمand not نَدفنwe have been buried فَنَحنso we are بِمَعزَلin isolation
منfrom الناسِpeople وَلاand not نَخشىwe are feared فَنَغشىso we are visited وَلاnor نَغشىwe visit
It is our grave, though we have not been buried; thus we are cut off
We have been entombed, though not buried; we are cut off
from the people, with no one coming to us and no one we may visit.
from people: we are not feared so as to be visited, nor do we visit.
أَلاis there no أحدanyone يَأوىtakes pity لِأَهلon the people of محلةa dwelling place
مُقيمينَdwelling فيin الدُنياthe world وَقَدthough already فارَقواthey have departed from الدُنياthe world
Is there no one who will pity the people of this dwelling—
Is there no one to pity the people of an abode,
abiding in the world, though they have departed from the world?
dwelling in the world, though they have departed from the world?
كَأَنَّهُمas though they لَمnot يَعرِفواhad known غَيرother than دارِهِمtheir dwelling
وَلَمand not يَعرِفواhad known غَيرother than التَضايَقcramped conditions وَالبَلوىand affliction
As though they had never known any home but their own,
As though they had known no dwelling but their own,
and never known anything but confinement and affliction.
and had known nothing but cramped conditions and affliction.
