يُنادونَهُthey call him وَقَدand already صمhe has grown deaf عَنهُمto them
يُنادونَهُ وَقَد صم عَنهُم
ثُمَّthen قالواthey said وَلِلنِّساءِand the women have نَحيبwailing
ثُمَّ قالوا وَلِلنِّساءِ نَحيب
They call to him, though he has grown deaf to them.
They call out to him, but he is deaf to them,
Then they said, while the women wailed:
Then they said, and the women began to wail,
ماwhat الَّذيthat which عاقَprevented أَنthat تردyou return جَواباًan answer
ما الَّذي عاقَ أَن ترد جَواباً
ايُّهاO المَقولthe eloquent speaker الاِديبُthe learned one الاِريبُthe discerning one
ايُّها المَقول الاِديبُ الاِريبُ
What kept you from returning an answer,
"What has made you unable to give an answer?
O eloquent, learned, discerning one?
Oh, you, the eloquent and fluent speaker!
إِنif تَكُنyou are لاnot تَطيقُyou are able to رجعreturning جَوابan answer
إِن تَكُن لا تَطيقُ رجع جَواب
فَبِماthen through what قَدindeed تَرىyou see وَأَنتand you خَطيبُa preacher
فَبِما قَد تَرى وَأَنت خَطيبُ
If you cannot return an answer,
If you cannot bear to give a reply,
then through what you see, you are a preacher,
Then by what you see, though you are an orator,
ذوpossessed of عَظاتadmonitions وَماand never وَعظتyou admonished بِشَيءwith anything
ذو عَظات وَما وَعظت بِشَيء
مِثلlike وَعظthe admonition of السُكوتِsilence إِذwhen لاnot تَجيبُyou reply
مِثل وَعظ السُكوتِ إِذ لا تَجيبُ
full of admonitions; yet you have never preached anything
With admonitions - yet you have admonished us with nothing
like the admonition of silence, when you do not reply.
Like the admonition of silence, when you do not answer."
