    Take comfort, O tear-streaming eye,

and let your tears flow: these are calamities that recur.

And you were my precious one and the lamp of my face,

and through you the world was sweet to me.

For if I have been bereaved of you during my lifetime,

and with you my beloved companion has departed from me,

then every companion must one day

have Death tear her beloved away from her.

Farewell to the world! For an old man

blind of eye has no share in this world.

A man dies while still reckoned alive,

and deceitful hope disappoints his expectations.

The physician offers me hope of healing my eye,

yet it has no physician other than God.

If a part of you dies, weep for that part,

for one part is close to another.
